Living on the Edge: A Closer Look at Poverty is a unique, interactive experience that helps facilitate understanding of the challenges faced by individuals in our community who are living at or below the poverty level. The event is a simulation that increases participants’ understanding of hardships and the emotional toll experienced by impoverished members of our society and the work it takes to achieve self-sufficiency.
The Living on the Edge experience will benefit anyone — volunteers, business leaders, philanthropists, decision-makers and those living in poverty. “Poverty is complex and it affects all of us, including the business community,” says Sharon Kruk, Community Relations of Junior League of Lufkin. “In order to address the problem, we need to have some common understanding about poverty and the challenges it creates. Living on the Edge is designed to increase awareness and we hope it fosters empathy, compassion and ultimately, an open dialogue towards a community-wide response to the issue of poverty.”
