JOB DESCRIPTION
 
NOTE: This job is for approximately 28 hours for the initial 6-12 months and then will transition to full-time. Any applicant must be willing to move from part-time to full-time (with salary adjustment.)
 
The Executive Director provides essential leadership in advancing the organization's strategic direction, workplace culture, and supporter relationships. This position is entrusted with the fulfillment of the mission, vision, and strategic plan of the organization. Further, this role is the key and leading role for the business of the organization, and involves planning, organizing, directing, controlling, and administering all of Habitat for Humanity Deep East Texas operations. The directors core responsibilities include the management and development of staff, volunteers and programs; the financial health of the organization; and the cultivation of robust community-based relationships.
 
The Executive Director must have the desire to lead a growing organization and possess excellent communication and interpersonal skills, a sophisticated approach to operational and staff management, and a passion for Habitat's work. The director should be a forward-thinker, developing relationships and programs that move the organization into the future as well as mentoring and developing new leaders, community partners and other critical relationships for the organization.
 
As the director they will be a primary advocate for affordable housing in Angelina and Nacogdoches Counties and should have experience working with diverse groups of people to be effective—from low-income families seeking housing to government officials to financial partners. The Executive Director should be a positive, energetic leader who is passionate about the Habitat for Humanity mission and is able to excite and motivate a wide range of supporters. The Executive Director should be a mature professional, with relevant work experience, background in social services, nonprofit management, and fundraising.
 
The Executive Director reports directly to the Board of Directors of Habitat for Humanity Deep East Texas. The Director will partner with the board of directors in strategic planning, serve as the primary spokesperson for the organization and oversee all aspects of the organizations operation. The Executive Director provides overall management and leadership in accordance with the organization’s directives, policies, and objectives. The Executive Director will work alongside the Board of Directors in developing a vision and strategic goals for Habitat. The Executive Director will lead the organization in achieving these goals by developing and implementing strategic and operational plans and integrating the work of committees, staff and volunteers into a coherent, consistent and effective program of advocacy, construction, financing and family support. The Executive Director accepts the covenant of Habitat for Humanity International (HFHI) and is a leading advocate in the community of Habitat Deep East Texas in regard to fulfilling it’s mission and vision. This work will result in successful home ownership for Habitat Deep East Texas partner families.
 
Essential Roles and Responsibilities
 
Strategic Leadership & Planning:
            -Work with the executive board to develop and implement strategic priorities. The Executive Director, in partnership with the Board, will develop a one-year strategic plan initially and then a five-year plan which will be updated annually.
            - Develop a comprehensive, strategic fundraising plan.
            - Develop and execute an annual marketing and public relation plan,
            - Enhance workplace culture through internal systems, creating a sustainable workplace culture and hiring developing and mentoring the staff and volunteers responsible for all functions of the strategic priorities.
 
Board of Directors:
          - Maintain a healthy and mutually supportive relationship with the Board of Directors.
            - Work closely with the board to set strategic vision, identify priorities and goals, and monitor the progress of the organization.
            - Report regularly to the board regarding organizational objectives, financial status and other relevant issues.
            - Support and guide board development in conjunction with external relationships.
            - Provide leadership in developing programs, organizational and financial plans with the Board of Directors.
            - Provide training and development opportunities for board members.
            - Work with the board president in new board member recruitment and orientation.
            - Provide monthly reporting of relevant financial results, sales activities, expenses, major donations, inventory turns, progress on current and prospective projects and upcoming public relations activities in the monthly board of directors meeting.                                                      - Work with the board specifically the Finance Committee to develop an annual budget.
 
Communication and Public Relations
            - Make use of all resources available to promote Habitat Deep East Texas. This should be a multi-faceted approach utilizing Habitat Deep East Texas’ website, social media, news outlets and publications, public relation events, interviews, press releases and any other relevant avenues.
            - Be a community influencer by being present at relevant community events, meetings and gatherings. The executive director should be a well-known positive influence on the Deep East Texas community.
            - Serve as the primary communication link among the regional office, board members, committees, staff, families in waiting, homeowner families, financial partners, government officials and volunteers.
- Establish sound working relationships and cooperative arrangements with local and state community groups, unions, clubs, foundations, businesses and nonprofit organizations.
             -Maintain a working knowledge of significant developments and trends within Deep East Texas and the broader Habitat community and communicate it well so that our supporters keep focused on our mission locally.
            - Consistently promote our advocacy efforts for HFHDET and affordable housing at a local, state, and federal levels.
            - Serve as liaison between HFH International/HFH Texas and local affiliate.
 
 
Staff/Volunteer Leadership and Management
            - Take responsibility for the recruitment and retention of Habitat staff and volunteers.
            - Supervise, train and mentor staff and volunteers in performance of their duties in accordance with HFHCC strategic objectives and human resource policies.
            - For staff, ensure that job descriptions are developed, yearly performance evaluations are performed and sound human resource practices are in place.
            - Encourage staff and volunteer development by providing ongoing training and educational opportunities.                                    
            - Build a culture that inspires and empowers staff and volunteers to see their work as more than a task but a critical part of the total program.
            - Maintain a climate, which attracts, retains, and motivates a diverse staff of top-quality staff and volunteers.            
            - Review and update written personnel policies annually and present same to Board for approval/adoption.
            - Promote active and broad participation by volunteers in all areas of the organization's work.
            - Ensure that staff meetings are held on a regular basis; convey relevant issues/concerns.
            - Maintain a close working relationship with the construction teams, Habitat staff and volunteers, including working knowledge of site progress to ensure all houses are built within time and budgetary constraints.
 
Financial and Fundraising Management
            - Take responsibility for maintaining sound financial practices.
            - Ensure timely payment of bills and preparation of financial reports as needed for board meetings, grants and funding sources.
            - Ensure that the organization operates within budget guidelines.
            - Works with Treasurer, Bookkeeper, Finance Committee and Auditor for the preparation of annual audited financial statements, returns and other reporting as necessary.
            - Work to establish and implement strategies for donor and volunteer recognition.
            - Provide leadership for solicitation of individual gifts, including identifying and meeting with major corporate and individual donors.
            - Cultivate in-kind materials, labor and land donations whenever possible.
            - Identify and apply for available grants as well as support the grant writing process.
            - Develop key relationships with strategic partners for development of fundraising for the affiliate and its programs.
            - Participate in fundraising activities by writing letters, making speeches and stimulating activities of others in direct fund raising, and may provide overall direction.
            - Develop and maintain volunteer, community and donor network for communication and solicitation of Habitat Deep East Texas needs.
 
 
Program Leadership and Development
            - Ensure the Homeowner Program meets annual building goals, timelines, and budget            - Provide leadership and oversight to the Family Selection Committee.
            - Lead the origination of loan documents and disclosures for the sale of affiliate housing units in accordance with state and federal regulations.
            - Hold chief administrative responsibility for public accountability of affiliate and provide regular reporting to the board.
            - Oversee and manage the Habitat office and affiliates physical facilities.
            - Lead implementation of affiliate policies and procedure adopted by the Board of Directors and in accordance with HFHI requirements.
 
 
Skills and Qualifications
            - Passion for the Habitat model and strong alignment with its mission and vision.                                - Preference for leadership experience in construction, non-profit, fundraising, community development, financial management or other related fields.
            - Has successfully built or significantly contributed to organizational capability, including organizational design, staff development, fundraising, community partnerships, financial management and/or board relations.
            - Demonstrate independent responsibility for program management and accomplishing results managing an annual budget in either the for-profit or not-for-profit world.
- Demonstrate a high level of written and verbal communication skills and be effective in public speaking and the development of presentations.
            - Possess strong problem-solving skills and the ability to multi-task.
            - Be able to work independently and in a fast-paced, multi-faceted environment.
            - Ability to travel when needed within the HFHDET region.
            - Ability to envision how technology could be leveraged to advance the goals of Habitat
            - Organizational leadership or high-level management experience in the nonprofit sector and an ability to manage a large amount of volunteers and staff.
            - A high degree of self-awareness, empathy and an authentic ease in working with diverse people in varying circumstances.
            - A management style that prizes inclusion and collaboration, develops individual and team strengths, and promotes community; the ability to inspire, empower and value staff and volunteers.
            - Experience in successfully developing and reliably executing long-range strategic plans.
            - A strong track record of building mutually beneficial relationships, partnerships and/or coalitions with positive outcomes.

Salary: $30,000 - $40,000 annually, depending upon qualifications
